Biological Data and Laboratory Automation Engineer for growing biotech in Copenhagen

Founded in 2012 and located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Biosyntia is a thriving biotech startup dedicated to delivering sustainable production processes for natural ingredients. Using proprietary technologies based on bioengineering and synthetic biology, we accelerate the development of microbial cell factories to a level previously unattainable. 

We are further expanding our R&D efforts and are looking for a bio- and data engineer with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing automated data workflows applied to metabolic engineering projects. The successful candidate will become fully responsible for the seamless integration of all data ranging from genomics, analytical chemistry, fermentation, and high throughput screening to further advance our ability to intelligently design, execute and learn from experiments. 



The candidate will play a key role in the R&D team to help continuously optimize our strain engineering platform through data integration. The candidate is further expected to become responsible for a gradual transition towards laboratory automation based on liquid handling robots (hand-in-hand with automated data workflows). R&D at Biosyntia is a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary effort and the candidate will be fully integrated into the existing team of ~15 strain- and fermentation engineers.


Immediate areas of responsibility

  • Working collaboratively with our scientists to build efficient laboratory data workflows in support of genomics, analytical chemistry, fermentation, and high throughput screening.
  • Establish fully or semi-automated workflows for next generation sequencing analysis
  • Establish fully or semi-automated workflows for high-throughput screening data analysis and visualization
  • Establish and implement laboratory information management systems (LIMS) or best practices for strain and sample tracking 
  • Build and maintain a comprehensive database of all of our genotypic and phenotypic data
  • Suggest which current manual workflows could be automated with robotics
  • Assist with purchasing, implementation and scripting of robotic workflows 
  • Work on DOE and integrate this with the data workflows and laboratory automation 



  • MS or PhD in bioengineering, informatics or equivalent 
  • Experience working alongside strain development and fermentation teams to form a contiguous strain evaluation platform
  • Preferably 3+ years of industry experience in a strain/fermentation engineering lab
  • Extensive familiarity with molecular biology, microbiology and genetics
  • Direct experience with the automation of NGS genomics workflows
  • Direct experience with laboratory automation systems and experimental workflow development
  • Direct experience with DOE
  • Experience using automated liquid handlers
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to cross collaborative nature of the role. 



In the assessment of the candidate, consideration will be given to:

  • Experience with R&D and industrial metabolic engineering projects
  • Level of experience with data management
  • The candidate’s interest in becoming part of a dynamic, startup team
