Fermentation scientist for a growing startup in Copenhagen

Founded in 2012 and located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Biosyntia is a thriving biotech startup dedicated to delivering sustainable production processes for natural ingredients. Using proprietary technologies based on bioengineering and synthetic biology, we accelerate the development of microbial cell factories to a level previously unattainable. 

We are further expanding our R&D efforts and are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic scientist with a solid background in microbial physiology and fermentation. The successful candidate will become part of our young and dynamic team of talented people including metabolic engineers and analytical chemists to successfully help drive our strain and process development activities. The candidate will work alongside our current fermentation scientist assuming full responsibility when she goes on maternity leave in December 2019. The position is full-time and will continue when she returns.


Responsibilities and tasks:

The research team is seeking a fermentation scientist with experience in developing and optimising microbial fermentation processes to produce small molecules. This individual should be knowledgeable in fermentation science, process control, and have a good understanding of microbial physiology, and biosynthetic pathways. The successful candidate will be fully integrated in the existing team of metabolic engineers and will be responsible for advancing fermentation optimization and process development at the company. We value proactivity and an innovative approach i.e. identifying areas of need and addressing them through the development of new technologies or by bringing outside technologies into the company. 


Immediate areas of responsibility:

  • Plan, design and execute fermentation experiments to maximise understanding and optimise strain performance.  
  • Scale-down and up of fermentation processes (microtiter-plate and bench-scale fermenter, primarily E. coli). Develop novel high throughput plate-based assays. 
  • Coordinate with strain engineers to ensure a streamlined workflow that serves to improve overall process understanding. 
  • Collaborate with analytical chemists to improve the quality and robustness of measurements and develop an understanding of process scalability i.e. process separation and purification.  
  • Improve systems for data collection and analysis.
  • Analyze and present data to fellow scientists and external companies and partners.



  • M.Sc. or PhD in biotechnology or similar. 
  • Strong understanding of the connection between microbial physiology and process performance.
  • Hands-on experience with bench-scale fermentation and plate-based culture methods with at least 2 – 4 years’ experience. Industrial experience is preferred. 
  • Familiarity with analytical chemistry/assay methods, automation systems, and LIMS.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including the use of statistics and control charts to monitor and analyze results. Ability to analyse large sets of data for hypothesis driven research. 
  • Experience working alongside high throughput screening teams and analytical chemistry teams to form a contiguous strain evaluation platform.
  • Experience working in a variety of scales. Preferably including up to pilot and commercial scale fermentation.
  • Knowledge of scalability considerations and an interest in downstream processing.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills due to cross collaborative nature of the role. 



In the assessment of the candidate, consideration will be given to:

  • Experience with R&D and industrial metabolic engineering
  • Level of experience with fermentation development
  • The candidate’s interest in becoming part of a dynamic, small startup team
