Data Automation Engineer for a Growing Biotech Startup

Founded in 2012 and located in Copenhagen, Denmark, Biosyntia is a thriving biotech startup dedicated to delivering sustainable production routes for natural ingredients. Using proprietary technologies based on bioengineering and synthetic biology, we accelerate the development of microbial cell factories.

 We are looking for a bio- and data engineer with demonstrated experience in developing and implementing automated data workflows applied to microbial engineering projects. The successful candidate will become fully responsible for the infrastructure of R&D data at Biosyntia. Types of data range from genomic and analytical chemistry to fermentation and high throughput screening data. The main goal is to further advance our ability to intelligently design, execute and learn from experiments.



The candidate will become the primary person responsible for all R&D data generated at Biosyntia and thereby play a key role in optimizing our strain engineering and process development platforms through data integration and automation. R&D at Biosyntia is a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary effort and the candidate will be fully integrated into the existing team of ~15 strain- and fermentation engineers.

Immediate areas of responsibility

  • Working collaboratively with our scientists to build efficient laboratory data workflows in support of genomics, analytical chemistry, fermentation, and high throughput screening.
  • Build or source and maintain a comprehensive database of all relevant R&D data.
  • Establish fully or semi-automated workflows for high-throughput screening data capture, analysis and visualization.
  • Identify, evaluate and implement third-party software solutions to support data infrastructure and integration
  • Establish and implement laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for sample tracking and inventory management
  • Write scripts to automate data workflows
  • Ensure all R&D data is securely stored and backed up
  • Teach and instruct the R&D team in using new data procedures
  • People management of e.g. student helpers and software engineers is to be expected



  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Bioengineering/Biotechnology, Computer science, Biostatistics
  • 5+ years of industry experience in a strain/fermentation engineering lab
  • Hands-on-experience with strain development and/or fermentation development projects
  • Demonstrated experience with database development and management
  • Programming/IT skills: Python and/or R, SQL Database/Coding, Data Visualization
  • Demonstrated experience with large data set analysis, statistics and visualization
  • Experienced in using and implementing LIMS systems for laboratory workflow management
  • Experience with implementing and using liquid handling automation and designing automated high throughput methods
